Queen Crone of Entropy
This work is centered on the Crone and the dynamics of entropy and aging in relationship to nature and society. My hope is that my work will encourage people to explore their preconceived assumptions regarding aging in general but specifically aging & women. I'm inspired by a reconsidering of the cultural construct of the Crone, too long saddled with negative connotations. My work seeks to redirect stereotypical devaluing attitudes of the Crone to a positive, direct relationship to the cycles of nature as embodied, and closely aligned with Mother Earth. Conceptually, my ideas are related to Ecofeminism which at its core "allows for the articulation of an ethic of care...of how we relate to the 'other', and that 'other'...is potentially any part of this planet" (Carol Adams). And as Chelsea Powers states, "Ecofeminism is a story of relationships. Relationships amongst all earth-bound beings". I propose that cultural disregard of the Crone as a symbol, and toward contemporary aging women, is directly related to an indifference to nature causing so much of the damaging impacts humans are having on our planet.
